You all knew this day would come.
Oh, I know what you are thinking, The Chicago Sun-Times still exists. But it has become a shell of itself. The only reason I would even buy it the last 3 years is for Richard Roeper, who is an outstanding columnist, and because of its easy to read and handle format. Today might be the final nail in the coffin for the Sun-Times.
Starting with this mornings edition, the Chicago Tribune released their new ‘to-go’ model. I picked it up by mistake thinking it was the Sun-Times. It is the exact same tabloid dimension as its rival. When I flipped to the back page and saw Rick Morrisey, I though he left the Trib and jumped to the Sun-Times. That is when I noticed it was the Tribune.
The new Tribune is so much easier to read than the old one, and it has about 40 more pages of worthwhile material than the Sun-Times. All the sections you are used to, less those clumsy fold outs which made it virtually impossible to read on the train. Sports is now on the back, just as with the Sun-Times, and their award winning sports team does circles over the Mariotti-less Sun-Times.
I have always liked the quality of the Tribune over the Sun-Times, but because of its cumbersome nature, I have always gravitated toward the Sun-Times.
So, starting today, I will be grabbing the Trib with breakfast, and reading Roeper online.
What do you think of the new Tribune format?
