Credit Repair Tip: How to Identify Original Creditor or Assigned Account

Identify Original Creditor

Ever wondered how to determine who owns a debt, or how to identify original creditor? There is a really simple trick to identify original creditor.

You can identify if an account has been sold or assigned by checking your report for the original creditor. If the original creditor is listed (for example, a credit card) check the balance. If it is showing a $0 dollar balance, it has been sold. If the original listing is showing a similar balance as the collections account, it has been assigned. It is easier to have a lower offer accepted if the account has been purchased by the collection company, as assigned accounts often pay out on a commission.
