This removal was a no brainer. Credit Protection Associates was showing an account for Comcast. It was nearing the credit reporting time period limit of 7 and 1/2 years, and I wasn’t even sure I owed the debt. I did have Comcast cable at one point, but I was about 92 percent sure I paid my final balance when I cancelled the service.

My first step was to contact Comcast and see if they had any information on file about a debt I owed with them. The last time I used their service was 2003, so I was unsure if they would be able to locate information. After staying on hold for what felt like an hour, the customer service agent came back on the line to tell me there was a 40 dollar charge on my account, and it had gone to collections. At this point, they were unable to tell me what company owned the debt.

I asked to speak with a manage and played the waiting game once more. The manager came on the line and indicated there was a late fee on my file that I never paid, and that was the fee the sent to collections. I vehemently denied owing them anything, and the manager discovered there was actually a reversal and I no longer owed the money. Great! I was going to use this as ammunition against Credit Protection Associates.

I sent a debt validation letter to Credit Protection Associates and it was returned to sender. I never investigated this further, I am unsure if the company still exists. At this stage I filed a dispute with the credit reporting agencies, and this account was removed from all three.

Easy as pie!
