It has been mentioned here a couple of times that I have a soft spot for singer/songwriters. I have already featured the likes of Ryan Powers and Kevin Andrew Prchal. It doesn’t just stem from the fact that I am one myself, but also from the fact that I feel they are often overlooked in a Chicago market that is over-saturated with Pop Punk goo and bionically engineered Pro-tools aided garbage, not always in that order. That says a lot for someone who spent the last 10 years bionically engineering his band and drifting towards pop punk. So when I stumble upon someone worth checking out, I tend to make a bee-line straight to the Artist of The Week Column.
The Micah Walk Band is someone that should be on your radar, if not now, than soon. One of my close friends brought them to my attention, and I always respect this friends judgment on music. Starting off in Springfield, they became the prominent band in our state capital, drawing large crowds at the local venues. Looking for better business opportunities, Micah and his band left the small city behind and have attempted to find their place among the busy Chicago music community. With a tight sound that walks the line somewhere between today’s singer-songwriters and painful, emotional rock like Whiskeytown era Ryan Adams, the Micah Walk Band looks poised for a run to the top of the Schuba’s style scene. Singer Micah Walk has already achieved remarkable acclaim, such as being voted Best Singer and Best Musician by Springfield’s ‘Illinois Times’ and with the release of their album ‘Bright Side Fantasy’, he has continued to garner more accomplishments.
Since arriving in Chicago, the Micah Walk Band has had their music played on the rock station, WXRT, and they have started securing shows at some of the better venues in town, such as Double Door and Elbo Room. While Chicago can be unforgiving to outsiders, the Micah Walk Band has made themselves at home and Chicago has welcomed them with open arms. Make sure you are a part of the ever growing fan base, so you too can say ‘I remember them before…’
Check out their Myspace page for upcoming shows and new tunes, my favorite is Goodbye Austin. They are also playing Double Door on February 20th. Go to Double Door’s website for ticket information.
